Details

On 28 May 2012 ASIC took over the registration of business names from the states and territories.

This launched the National Business Names system, replacing the existing state-based system. Business Names registered after 28 May 2012 will be registered nationally. Businesses that operate in multiple states will no longer have to maintain business name registrations in multiple states.

If on 28 May 2012, your business name was registered in a state or territory, you will not have to register it again. Your business name will be automatically transferred to the Business Names Register. The period of registration will also be transferred.

If you wish to register a Business Name after 28 May 2012, you must lodge the new National Business Name application form to ASIC.

One of the major changes as a result of the National Business Names system is the requirement of an Australian Business Number. From 28 May 2012, every Business Name registration must be linked to an ABN. The ABN replaces the old state-based business name registration numbers.

ASIC Forms such as the 201, 205A, 410 and 410B have all been modified to include the ABN. If the Business Name registration does not have an ABN, the state registration number will still be accepted.

Select the Company from the list.

ABN & Name tab

Field	Explanation
Busines Name	Enter the Business Name
ABN*	The Australian Business Number (ABN) is a unique identifier issued by the Australian Business Register (ABR)
ABN Effective Date	Only required if the ABN application is yet to be processed
ABN Ref No*	Only required if the ABN application is yet to be processed
ASIC Key	A unique number used in ASIC Connect that establishes your identity and protects your business information by making sure only you, and those you have authorised can access it. See ASIC Website for more information

Addresses tab

Addresses related to the business

Field	Explanation
Registered Address	Address for service of documents. Must be a physical or street address in Australia and not a PO box.
Business Address	Principal place of Business. Must be a physical or street address in Australia and not a PO box.
Business Address 2	Any additional Principal place of Business

Registration & Renewals tab

This section allows users to enter date related information for Business name registration. This information is for your internal use.

Field	Explanation
Date of Registration	Date of the initial registration for the Business name
Renewal Date	The renewal date for the business name registration
Date Ceased	Date the business name registration ceased
